The SaaS backup industry matures
Tuesday, October 8th, 2013
Yesterday, our competitors Backupify announced the new backup-as-a-service
product they’ve been hinting for a long time. Congratulations to the new service, good luck, and thanks for helping to evangelize the importance of second location backup in SaaS.
Based on what’s been announced so far, it seems like a fairly traditional supporting service concept, where the value proposition for each Independent Software Vendor (ISV) considering using the service may be hard to identify. The idea is, any ISV may sign up for a license and use the newly developed API to make sure as much data as possible from the ISV’s product(s) is securely backed up.
While this potentially increases the market reach for Backupify, the platform model also puts them one step further away from the end users, which may or may not have branding implications and reduce control of sales efforts.
It will be very interesting to follow their early traction and ISV feedback, especially since we at Cloudfinder
have been working hard all of 2013 to build the next generation of multi-source SaaS backup, specifically designed not only for fast and easy connections to new backup sources like the new Backupify service, but also for cross service search, analytics and restoring/data migration.
